What Are Reel Lawnmowers?

Many of today’s new homeowners are looking for environmentally friendly solutions to yard maintenance. Reel lawnmowers are gaining in popularity although they are not really a new idea. There are homeowners that are environmentally conscious who are giving up their petroleum powered and self-propelled mowers for the muscle the muscle powered and old fashioned versions in record numbers.

Typical lawnmowers are different than reel lawnmowers in several important ways. The manual push mower was invented in 1830 by Edwin Budding and the middle class are even allowed to easily maintain their lawn. You need to propel this type of lawnmower yourself because it doesn’t have an engine and was self-propelled the old fashioned way. The design is fairly simple; several blades are mounted on a circular frame. The blades cut the grass as they pass as they spin around, perpendicular to the ground. Quite heavy and made of steel are the early models which makes them difficult to push. Using today’s newer reel mowers which are made of lighter plastics and metals are easier than using their predecessors.

Reel mowers are attractive to environmentally conscious homeowners for several reasons. These mowers don’t use oil and gasoline so there will be no harmful emissions. Accidents are less frequent with reel lawnmowers as well. Once the user stops pushing them, the blades stop spinning. Engine powered lawnmowers cause millions of accidents annually, but accidents caused by reel mowers are far less frequent, and usually much less severe.

For consumers that are on a budget, reel mowers seem attractive because they are typically less expensive to purchase and maintain than engine mowers. A little lubricant and occasional blade sharpening is how you maintain reel mowers. Initial purchase prices are a fraction of the souped up rotary mowers on the market today. Many users are substituting a good lawn mowing session for one of their weekly jogs because manual push mowers are also great for exercise.

Using reel mowers has another benefit and that’s noise reduction. Except for the occasional grunt of the user, these mowers are virtually silent. The neighbors won’t be disturbed if you cut grass at midnight or during early morning and this is another benefit of using reel mowers.

When it comes to these manual mowers, there are disadvantages as well. Unlike gas or electric powered mowers, their operation requires a lot more effort and they are quite difficult to maneuver. Your cuttings are not typically collected by reel mowers and twigs and sticks can’t be cut as well. Sticks can even jam the mechanisms of the reel mower. Unlike engine powered mowers, manual mowers don’t cut tall grass or shred leaves as well which is why more raking and frequent lawn maintenance is required.

A reel lawnmower might not be the best choice for a 5 acre plot. But for lawn maintenance, it would be a green choice to use manual lawnmowers because of all its cost savings and benefits especially for today’s urban homeowner with a small yard.
